PCNCDP Statement on Revoking Endorsement to State Senator Valerie Foushee
April 17, 2022 - The Progressive Caucus of the NCDP recently endorsed State Senator Valerie Foushee as a progressive candidate for US Congress (NC District 4). After we made our endorsement, campaign finance disclosures showed that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) made significant donations to Senator Foushee's campaign comprising more than half the campaign's total quarterly fundraising.
The relationship between the US and Israel is often stated to be based on mutual respect for democracy and justice.
However, AIPAC endorsed 37 Republicans who refused to vote for the certification of President Joe Biden on January 6, 2021. AIPAC is a single-issue organization that sees nothing wrong with supporting insurrectionists in the US as long as those insurrectionists continue to align their Congressional votes with AIPAC goals. The damage done by the January 6 insurrectionists cannot be 'overcome' by AIPAC's support of Israel. We denounce AIPAC for its support of those who acted to destroy our democracy.
No American candidate should be accepting funds from an organization that provides financial support for those seeking to destroy our democracy. Despite her sterling reputation and years of service, Senator Foushee has opted to accept AIPAC support and donations to her campaign. We contacted Senator Foushee's campaign for clarification and urged her to reject AIPAC support. Senator Foushee’s campaign stated the commitment between her campaign and AIPAC was strong and unyielding.
We stand by our progressive American values of democracy and human rights for all. AIPAC’s support of insurrectionists and Senator Foushee’s strong embrace of AIPAC runs contrary to our values. Because of the actions of AIPAC and Senator Foushee’s refusal to reject their support, the Progressive Caucus leadership voted and overwhelmingly decided to withdraw our support of Senator Foushee's candidacy for Congress.
